The unconformity at the base of the Venado Formation where it overlies the 'Antelope' Shale is characterized in some localities by very coarse, poorly sorted, pebble, cobble, and boulder conglomerates in the basal strata of the Venado. Difficulties of interpretation result from good evidence that these Cretaceous formations are marine deposits. The mass transport mechanism is interpreted to have been similar to subaerial or submarine landlides occurring during a period of uplift and erosion marked by the unconformity.
