Quartzites are not necessarily metamorphic; many are sedimentary and represent sandstones that have been subjected to cementation by secondary silica, compaction through pressure- solution of the quartz grains, or other nonmetamorphic processes, The mechanisms of formation of the sedimentary quartzites are discussed and it is proposed that the term pressolved quartzite be applied to them.
