Abstract

The gross composition and textures of upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sandstones of the northern Apennines, Italy, indicate a provenance and a maturity which are not correlative with the heavy mineral assemblages. Heavy mineral quantitative trends and corrosion structures suggest post-depositional loss of the more unstable minerals by intrastratal solution.
