Comparison between the sand-grain orientation and sole-mark directions in an Eocene calcarenite-cacilutite-shale sequence and on Oligocene sand- shale complex of the northern Apennines, Italy, showed a close correlation in direction and indicate that the grain fabric is a useful paleocurrent indicator. The grain imbrication, however, appeared to be more variable, showing only partial agreement with the current direction inferred from sole marks.
