Abstract

Detrital illite, primary syngenetic chamosite, and diagenetic chlorite make up the clay fractions of Clinton ironstones and associated rocks of Silurian age in New York. Illite occurs only in shale beds or shale laminae within ironstone beds. Chamosite occurs only in the ironstone beds, chiefly oolites. Chlorite is not restricted to a particular lithology but replaces earlier formed minerals.
