Abstract

Water-soluble chloride is determined by titration with mercuric nitrate in the presence of diphenylcarbazone-bromophenol blue in distilled water leachates of carbonate rocks that had been crushed to -80 mesh and heated in flowing helium to about 600 degrees C. About 80 percent of the test samples of known marine origin contain more than 35 ppm Cl and a similar percentage of those of known nonmarine origin contain less than 35 ppm. Possibilities of recrystallization in the presence of a solution whose chlorinity differed from that of the medium of original crystallization and other geologic factors must be considered in interpretation of analyses.
