A method is described for computing from chemical data the composition and amount of normative illite in illite-kaolinite-quartz mixtures. Procedure is illustrated in a logic flow chart. When the presence of illite, kaolinite, and a few other minerals, such as quartz and pyrite, can be demonstrated in the insoluble residues, it is possible to use the digital computer to assign the amount of each element of the chemical analysis to these minerals in such a way that the most probable amount and composition of illite in the rock itself can be derived. The method is applicable to many upper Paleozoic shales and carbonate rocks of the Appalachian region.
