Abstract

A descriptive petrographic classification of carbonate rocks from the Bird Spring Group (Carboniferous-Permian) in southern Nevada was devised by combining a modified form of the classifications of Bramkamp and Powers (1958) with some of the features of Folk's (1959), Carozzi's (1960), and Wolf's (1960) classifications. Power's (1962) nomenclature for strongly recrystallized and strongly dolomitized carbonate rocks is used. Approximately 790 units were delineated in the Bird Spring section near Lee Canyon, and thin sections were prepared from specimens from each unit. A means for tabulating data from thin sections is proposed and illustrated.
