"The sediments of the Heron Island reef are derived mainly from Lithothamnion, Halimeda, corals, molluscs and foraminifera. The relative durabilities of the organisms appear to depend on whether they are calcitic or aragonitic. The coarser sediment is predominantly calcitic, and the factors of source, physiography and water movement effect the concentration of the predominantly calcitic sediment in certain regions and the finer aragonitic sediment in other regions."
