Abstract

The thin-section study of siltstones containing hematite and other iron oxides is hampered by the masking effect of these minerals, which generally coat grain boundaries or permeate the micaceous minerals. Iron oxides can be removed by boiling the smoothly ground chip in 6N HC1, to which stannous chloride has been added, for 3-5 min until the section appears greenish in color. The chip is then washed, dried, and mounted. The oxides may be preserved in a portion of the section by coating with Duco cement before treatment.
