Abstract

The Schenectady Flags and the Austin Glen Member of the Normanskill Shale have previously been interpreted as being deposited during the Trenton Stage (Ordovician) in two troughs separated by a land barrier. The Austin Glen is supposedly older Trenton than the Schenectady. Primary sedimentary structures in both formations infer a current direction from the southwest. Furthermore, the Austin Glen and lower part of the Schenectady are found in the same graptolite zone used for correlation. The sandstones of the two formations are lithicgraywackes. From the similarities the writer believes that the Austin Glen and Schenectady have been deposited in a miogeosyncline by turbidity currents and are in part correlative, and that the hypothesized land barrier between the troughs may not have existed.
