Using pure montmorillonite and kaolinite clay muds with NaCl and CaCl 2 solutions, experimental determinations of the compaction rate and clay mineral texture have been studied up to 3,200 atmospheres. The data show that for a given clay the equilibrium porosity attained at a given pressure does not depend on electrolyte concentration, but that the compaction rate and clay mineral texture are strongly influenced by salt concentration.
