Although source areas and weathered parent rock materials remained essentially the same during deposition of the Annot sandstone formation (Tertiary) of the French Maritime Alps, petrographic variability is extensive as a result of mineralogic and textural variations reflecting the distinctive characteristics of successive suspension flows, each of which was characterized by its own specific density and velocity gradient. It is suggested that the variations observed would be characteristic of any formation comprising turbidites.
