Abstract

"Sediments from Sydney harbour contain, as clay mineral components, kaolinite, illite, a mineral with a 14 A periodicity having iron as the major interlayer cation, and mixed- layer assemblages. On passage from the fresh water environment of the Lane cove and Parramatta rivers into the harbour, the interlayer ferric iron is reduced and the 14 A mineral becomes degraded. Illite develops in the marine environment from the degraded material."
