Abstract
Skeletal detritus derived largely from corals and algae forms the bulk of the surface material of the reef flat and sand cay of Heron Island reef. Oolitic and other accretionary material is absent. The distribution of the skeletal sand, in which several facies are distinguished on the basis of textural and compositional variations, is controlled by faunal, physiographic, and current patterns.
