Abstract

Oriented till cores and hand specimens may be used for rapid macroscopic fabric studies by measuring the apparent long axes of particles on dissected or broken till surfaces. Preparation and measurements require only up to 1/2 hour per sample. Maxima in these fabric diagrams are not as pronounced as in those obtained by more precise techniques, and the transverse maxima tend to be exaggerated. In spite of these inaccuracies, the fabric maxima are found to be in close agreement with the known ice flow direction in 16 out of the 21 till samples measured. The described procedure is suitable also for rapid fabric studies in tillites.
