Analyses of samples from localities near Langholm, south Scotland, show that the Whita sandstone, forming the base of the lower Carboniferous Cementstone series, is an orthoquartzite which is homogeneous in grain size, shape, orientation, and composition both vertically and laterally. The sediments were derived from a northern source, probably from the lower Paleozoic massif of the southern uplands.
