Abstract

Ten sedimentary petrological provinces are distinguished in the Sunda shelf region, based on analysis of the mineralogical composition of bottom sediments from the Sunda sea and the Straits of Malacca, and the areal distribution and characteristic mineral associations of each province described. The provenance of the detrital material is discussed in the light of varying concepts of Tertiary and Quaternary paleogeography of the area.
