Three mechanical sieve shakers are compared with each other and with hand shaking in order to establish their relative efficiency. Four cuts of a sample of river sand are used. Phi means computed from the several size distributions are compared by the method of analysis of variance. It is demonstrated that a mechanical sieve shaker which includes a jarring action is superior to two others having horizontal motion only.
