The fossil record (including trace fossils) is remarkably reduced after the end-Permian mass extinction. Faunal recovery increased continuously during the Mesozoic, and a marked restructuring of shallow marine benthic communities during Jurassic and Cretaceous time is known as the Mesozoic Marine Revolution.
