Mr. President, members and friends of the Society of Economic Geologists: I am pleased and honored to introduce Jens Gutzmer as the 36th recipient of the Lindgren Award.

Jens is receiving this award on the grounds of his contribution towards understanding the genesis of manganese deposits in southern Africa and how some of these relate to laterites, paleoclimatic change, and the history of atmospheric oxygen.
