Sir: Bechtel et al. (1999) suggest that the formation of diagenetic illite in the Kupferschiefer of the Polish Zechstein basin was coeval with the mineralizing event. The ages estimated for the diagenetic illites are in the range of 190 to 216 Ma. A Middle to Late Triassic date (240–220 Ma) for the high-grade mineralization in the Kupferschiefer was inferred from the remanent magnetization of hematite inside the Rote Fäule zone in southwestern Poland and the polar wander paths of Europe and Russia (Jowett et al., 1987).
