Final result of the evolution of primary deposits of synsedimentary and/or early diagenetic origin. The main ore minerals are hematite, goethite, magnetite, siderite, pyrite, and pyrolusite. Two groups of deposits distinguished: one is intercalated in mica schists and the other in marbles. Three mineralogic facies (oxide, carbonate, and magnetite-pyrite). Formation took place in a restricted lagoon-type basin which subsequently underwent a complex evolution. Facies were affected by Alpine metamorphism and supergene alteration. The main source of iron is considered to be continental weathering.
