Abstract

An experimental study of exchange reactions between sphalerite and lead solutions or galena and zinc solutions has been made at 300 degrees C. The chemical results and morphological observations show that the reactions proceed by dissolution of the primary mineral and recrystallization of the secondary mineral from solution. Solid state diffusion does not play any part. The depth of replacement inside the primary mineral depends on the ratio of volumes occupied by the two minerals.
