The element distribution in thirty-two samples from Cretaceous phosphate bearing strata in Jordan is explained in terms of eight related factors. The factors were deduced using the statistical technique of R-mode factor analysis. A reconstruction of the physico-chemical conditions of deposition is made on the basis of the mineralogy, petrography and chemical factor pattern. The model is consistent with the tectonic setting envisaged for such deposits.
