Abstract

Stratigraphic, lithologic, mineralogic, and chemical gradation from banded iron formations through garnet quartzite to lead-zinc ore suggests that the three types of rock have a common origin. The banded iron formations are shown to be metamorphosed chemical sediments, and it is concluded that the primitive lead-zinc ore bodies also had a sedimentary origin. The paper contains an exceptional amount of chemical and petrographic data.
