"The I. R. spectra of macerals show that the general nature of the spectra are more or less similar in higher rank coals and somewhat different in the lower ranks. Presence of H-bonded (OH), H-bonded (C=O) or polycyclic extended quinones are prominent with vitrinites. Exinites and fusinites contain more of aliphatic and alicyclic ethers, epoxides, sulfoxides, etc. Fusinites and micrinites have greater aromaticities than vitrinites, and a greater number of C=C bonds. Sulfur in the form (SH) and (CS) stretching vibrations are greatest in exinites."
