Abstract

Reviews conflicting usage of the terms aureole and halo and suggests that halo be defined as "a secondary dispersion pattern due to the supergene migration of elements in the regolith or soil, often superjacent over a 'blind' ore deposit in the bedrock" and that aureole be defined as "a primary dispersion pattern due to the hypogene migration of elements in the bedrock, due to mineralization, metamorphism or metasomatism derived from magmatic solutions or volatiles emanating from an igneous intrusion."
