Abstract

The concentration of Pb in aqueous solutions saturated with PbS (galena) and H 2 S in the range 30 degrees to 90 degrees C. at atmospheric pressure was measured by the mixed-color dithizone method. Results indicate that PbS forms a complex PbS.nH 2 S in these solutions, and that n is probably close to 2. The values of Delta H degrees and Delta S degrees for the formation of the complex are calculated to be 13 Kcal/mole and 16 cals/deg mole respectively. These results are compared with published results of studies on other sulfides, and are found to agree well with those for Ag but not for Zn.
