Abstract

Projected strip-mining of a thick lignite seam in the Miocene Cuddalore series near Neyveli will require control of ground water in the underlying artesian aquifers, consisting of extensive beds of medium- to coarse-grained sand and gravel. Results of geologic and hydrologic studies indicate that control can be effected by a battery of large-diameter wells with a pumping rate of about 40,000 gallons per minute. The water is suitable for irrigation and, after treatment for hardness, for most industrial uses.
