Abstract

When the Undersill shaft penetrated beneath a thick diabase sill at a depth of 1,800 feet, a heavy flow of saline water and methane was encountered under a pressure of 1250 pounds. Halite was formed in the vein, and in cracks in the diabase, which is later than the vein. A Precambrian sedimentary source is suggested for the halite.
