Abstract

Methods of determining true north from the azimuth of Polaris whenever the angular elevation of Polaris and any other identified star can be measured simultaneously, are here outlined: the method described in detail for the star Mizar (Zeta Ursae Majoris), for which working constants are given; and outlined for Ruchbah (Delta Cassiopeiae), with working constants. Basic theory is given, but is accompanied by specific instructions for rapid determinations under field conditions.
