Abstract

Helvite from Iron Mountains, New Mexico, occurs as a contact mineral with garnet, fluorite, magnetite, and chlorite. Other minerals may be vesuvianite, hematite, and, of course, calcite. In order to detect easily the helvite and make semiquantitative analyses in the field, a staining method with As 2 O 3 or antimony was developed which saved much time and expense.
