Abstract

"Bauxite production on Bintan Island (near Singapore) began in 1935 and at present amounts to about 5 to 6 percent of the world production. The bauxite is of the aluminous laterite type. The parent rock of this aluminous laterite is an aphanitic hornfels, with nuclei of feldspar and quartz, and a silica content of about 65 percent. The process of lateritization can be studied in a section exposed by a shaft sunk below the bauxite layer. This shaft reached the unweathered parent rock at a depth of 52 meters. Conclusions can be drawn regarding the conditions favorable for bauxite formation in this region and directions are given for further exploration in the Netherlands Indies."
