E.W. Machens’ book describes the life and work of Hans Merensky, one of the giants of economic geology. Merensky discovered the Bushveld platinum and chromium deposits (hence the name “Merensky Reef”), the diamond placer deposits on the west coast of South Africa, the extension of the Wits gold deposits in the Orange Free State, and the vermiculite and apatite deposits of Phalaborwa. All of these are world-class deposits and thus Merensky’s work clearly had a considerable impact on South Africa’s economy and history.
