The stated purpose of assembling this set of papers was to use “the watershed approach to develop a strategy for gathering and communicating the scientific information needed to formulate effective and cost-efficient remediation of affected lands in a watershed” to the public and to land- and resource-management agencies. This approach is part of an Abandoned Mine Lands Initiative implemented by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1997, in cooperation with federal land-management agencies.
