Mr. President, members, and guests: It is fitting that I should be asked to present the SEG Penrose Medal, the highest honor of the Society of Economic Geologists, to Mike Solomon, as I was one of his earliest B.Sc. Honours and Ph.D. students at the University of Tasmania in the 1960s. Through his strong personality, quiet passion for his subject, and interesting lifestyle, he was also instrumental in turning a budding paleontologist into an economic geologist, something for which I am eternally grateful to him, even if the same cannot be said for the economic geology community.
