Fluid-fluid interactions—mixing, immiscibility, and phase separation—are frequently proposed as mechanisms of ore genesis. As is written in the introductory pages of this volume, “…immiscibility of fluids and the associated phenomena of multi-phase fluid flow are generally dealt with only in subsections…. This volume attempts to fill this gap…..and explicitly focus on the role that co-existing fluids play in the diverse geologic environments.” There is much didactic sense in a volume with this focus, if only because there are commonalities of the components and topologies of phase diagrams in multi-component fluid systems, whatever their compositions—magmas, aqueous solutions, or hydrocarbons.
