The work of Mike Batzle has been — and continues to be — an inspiration to rock physicists around the world. In the basement of the Green Center of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), which houses the Center for Rock Abuse, and before that at ARCO and MIT, Batzle was ceaselessly brewing up new ways to unlock the properties hidden inside rocks and their fluids. In this special section, we present contributions of researchers who either collaborated with Batzle or were inspired by the results he and his students have shared over the last decades.
