Abstract
Urban geophysics ups the ante in the world of applied geophysics, if for no other reason than the settings. The objectives and associated challenges are the same as other applications: to characterize, image, delineate, detect, resolve, etc. But it is the arena that makes the job of the urban geophysicist not one for the timid. It is a job that requires innovative thinking and seemingly off-the-wall approaches. Geophysical warriors who take on these daunting missions are cut from a unique cloth, the Team 6 of the applied geophysical community. Well, maybe that is a bit over the top, but as you will see in this special section, meeting the data challenges of urban settings and dealing with associated human sprawl requires problem-solving that clearly steps well beyond anything they tried to teach us in school.
