Abstract
In this paper we discuss the process and accuracy of estimating seismic anisotropy parameters from standard well log data using Backus averaging. The work is validated by numerical modeling that leads to the concept of a dimensionless number we call the Backus number, B. The value of B allows us to determine the averaging length that is “correct” for a given frequency and purpose.
