Abstract
It is generally recognized that salt must deform inelastically to achieve the extreme deformation states that are evident in present day salt structures (Figure 1). However, such impressive structural “gymnastics” would not be possible unless the sediments surrounding the salt deformed inelastically as well. This is not particularly surprising, given that sediments also deform inelastically when they compact.
