Progress in wave-theoretical multiple suppression methods has extended predictive multiple suppression to long-period reverberation, such as those in deepwater. Berryhill and Kim (1986) and Wiggins (1988) used wavefield extrapolation techniques to simulate and predict the multiple wavefield from the recorded data. These techniques require only a model of the water layer. Verschuur et al. (1992) found a multiple-suppression technique that requires no earth model. Although these methods are often very effective, they have drawbacks when applied to three-dimensional data—i.e., they are computationally demanding and favor dense, wide-aperture areal sampling of both source and detector positions, which is often a problem for marine data.
