Abstract
Politics, religion, and love—three discussion areas in which people usually are cautioned to tread lightly. Not so for Carl Savit. Carl relished any opportunity to dive into these topics, basically any subject that would allow him to search out what people think and in the process to share a bit of his wealth of original thought. Variations on this pastime included sparring with lawyers, fencing on philosophy, mollifying politicians—and, along the way, teaching many of us what's important in seismic exploration. Carl would have thrived many centuries back, for jousting and chivalry were his hallmark. At the same time, no individual could be said to have been more at the forefront of the digital revolution in geophysics than Carl Savit, and nobody could have been more valuable than he in envisioning future directions for the technology.
