In a recent publication, Gutowski and Treitel (1987) gave a clear exposition of one-dimensional (1-D) modeling. They considered the most general case of arbitrary locations of source and receiver within the layered medium, where the source may have different downgoing and upgoing strengths and may be above or below the receiver. The solution, in the form of two rational polynomial expressions in the Z-transform domain, was analyzed in detail for some interesting special cases.
