An attempt has been made to predict relative contents of sand, shale, and coal in a sequence of lithologies as traversed and depicted by a seismogram, using discriminant analysis. Monte Carlo simulations and Markov chains have been used to model the subsurface, and discriminant analysis was first tried on these and then tested on field data. Subsurface lithology was predicted by this technique and shows great potential in future exploration programs.
