A crinoid fauna and a new species of Pycnocrinus from the Martinsburg Formation (Upper Ordovician), lower Hudson Valley, New York

ABSTRACT Zone-diagnostic Middle to Upper Devonian ammonoids and conodonts occur in a sequence of thin carbonate beds in siliciclastic sections along the Allegheny front and northern fold belt of central Pennsylvania. The lowest, in the upper Tully Formation, and the succeeding four in the Harrell Shale, are southward continuations of marker beds long known in the Tully Limestone and overlying basin, slope, and shelf facies of the Genesee Group of New York State. These pelagic beds are Appalachian Basin signals of transgressive condensed intervals within global high-sea-level episodes and are associated with a worldwide biotic overturn in the tropical marine realm. The Upper Givetian Tully Pharciceras amplexum bed has close lithic and faunal equivalents in the Taghanic biocrisis interval in Morocco and southern Europe. The Lower Frasnian styliolinid upper Genundewa Limestone, with the entry of Manticoceras , and, in the succeeding dark West River Shale, the Bluff Point Bed, with the entry of late Koenenites and early palmatolepid conodonts, are Appalachian highstand signals of the worldwide Timan bioevent transgression recognized in Western Australia, the Russian Platform, southern Europe, Morocco, western Canada, and now Pennsylvania. The widespread occurrences of discrete ammonoid beds, even in the more proximal or shoreward sedimentary settings of the Catskill Delta, reinforce the view that they accumulated under conditions of sequestered sediment supply when transgressions flooded the newly vegetated and deep-root-forested delta flats. As such, they overprinted or interrupted the westward progradation of siliciclastic sediments generated by mountain-building tectophases of the Acadian orogeny. The Lower Frasnian ammonoid Epitornoceras dennisoni n. sp., described herein, from the Crosby Beds in the Harrell Shale at Milesburg, Pennsylvania, is named in honor of John Dennison.

ABSTRACT Pinnacle reef tracts are geomorphic features of carbonate systems that originated in the early Silurian and display an episodic distribution into the Cenozoic. Detailed study of Silurian pinnacle reefs of the United States midcontinent demonstrates repeated motifs, but most enigmatic is the coincidence of carbonate carbon isotope (δ 13 C carb ) excursions and reef pulses. Silurian δ 13 C carb excursions were associated with environmental changes and extinctions, and reefs appear to mark a resurgence of conditions favorable to biomineralizers following those extinction events. Previous workers in the region identified six discrete reef origination events in the United States midcontinent during the Silurian. Our reevaluation of outcrops and cores, conodont collections, and the generation of considerable new chemostratigraphic data across the region are clarifying the age relations of these events and their relationships to perturbations of the global carbon cycle.
Lower to middle Paleozoic sequence stratigraphy and paleontology in the greater Louisville, Kentucky, area
ABSTRACT The Cincinnati Arch region of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana is an icon of North American Paleozoic stratigraphy, as it exposes strata ranging from Ordovician to Pennsylvanian in age. In particular, the highly fossiliferous Ordovician, Silurian, and Middle Devonian successions have been extensively studied since the nineteenth century, and continue to serve as a crucial proving ground for new methods and models of biostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, and sequence stratigraphy in mixed clasticcarbonate depositional settings. These strata are locally capped by Middle Devonian limestones with their own diverse fauna and unique depositional history. Outcrops near Louisville, Kentucky, provide an excellent opportunity to examine these strata firsthand and discuss sequence stratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, sedimentary environments, and paleoecology. A series of new roadcuts south of Mount Washington, Kentucky, exposes the lower to middle Richmondian Stage (Upper Ordovician, Cincinnatian) and presents a diverse suite of marine facies, from peritidal mudstones to offshore shoals, coral biostromes, and subtidal shales. These exposures are well suited for highlighting the revised sequence stratigraphy of the Cincinnatian Series, presented herein. Nearby outcrops also include much of the local Silurian succession, allowing an in-depth observation of Llandovery and Wenlock strata, including several chemostratigraphically important intervals that have improved regional and international correlation. Supplementary exposures east and north of Louisville provide context for subjacent and superjacent Ordovician-Silurian strata, as well as examples of lateral facies changes and unconformities. Additionally, the Falls of the Ohio at Clarksville, Indiana, features an exceptional outcrop of the overlying Middle Devonian succession, including an extensive and well-preserved biostrome of corals, sponges, and other marine fauna. These fossil beds, coupled with significant exposures in local quarries, are critical for understanding the paleoecology and stratigraphy of the Middle Devonian of the North American midcontinent.

Abstract During the Global Taghanic Biocrisis ( c. 385 Ma), Middle Devonian faunas worldwide underwent extinction. In the biocrisis type region, the northern Appalachian Basin, biodiversity changes occurred through three bioevents that ultimately resulted in the loss of numerous endemic taxa. Carbon isotope excursions during this biocrisis have been documented in various stratigraphic successions, but never in the type region. Herein, we reconstruct changes in δ 13 C carb from the biocrisis type region and compare these changes to local faunal transitions. An approximately 1.5‰ negative excursion corresponds to the first bioevent, a time of inferred global warming and replacement of most endemic taxa of the mid-palaeolatitude Appalachian Basin by invasive palaeoequatorial taxa. An approximately 2‰ positive excursion is associated with the second bioevent, recognized as a return of the endemic fauna and the loss of invasive taxa. This positive excursion occurs near the Polygnathus ansatus–Ozarkodina semialternans zonal boundary and is recognized elsewhere. Faunal cosmopolitanism associated with the third bioevent corresponds with an inflection in the carbon isotope record from negative to positive trending values, which agrees with a positive carbon record excursion seen elsewhere at the semialternans – Schmidtognathus hermanni zonal boundary. This new carbon isotope record provides an important reference for recognizing this biocrisis in other areas and facies.
