Summary

During the evaluation and construction stages of the Bougainville Copper Project, intensive engineering geological and rock mechanical investigations were carried out to provide slope design information initially for the assessment of the economic feasibility, and later for the operation, of the mine and its facilities. This paper describes the nature and background of these investigations, the problems that have been encountered and the current studies.
