Following a brief statement of the normal engineering solutions, soil mechanics design procedures are discussed in relation to site investigation, sampling, testing techniques and analysis.
The arrangement of the geological features of a soft deposit dominates all stages of design. Soil specimens have to be representative of the strata in location, quality and size for adequate prediction of the strength and the consolidation of alluvial deposits. Permeable fabric normally allows the foundations of small embankments (5 m) to consolidate rapidly but larger embankments may require a limited number of sand drains to avoid serious pos-construction settlement.
Centrifuge studies allow a check on design provided the strata and their fabric are properly represented in the model.
