This book is the second edition of the 1985 publication of the same title which was produced by a Working Party of the Engineering Group of The Geological Society. The first edition proved to be very successful and a useful publication for those involved in the aggregate and quarry industries. Since the original working party convened in 1979 there have been changes in specification and new developments in the industry. This necessitated reconvening the Working Party in 1989 and culminated in this publication.
The main differences between the first and second editions are: aggregate descriptions and classifications have been revised and the previous CADAM classification is not pursued; artificial aggregate materials are included; test result data have been included. In addition, the text of most chapters has been changed, and some completely rewritten.
Chapter 1, the introduction, briefly describes the background to the publication and its objectives. Chapter 2 is an introduction for non-geologists of basic stratigraphy, geology, geomorphology and the occurrence and distribution of aggregate sources. Chapter 3 deals with field investigations which, although specific to aggregate investigations, is covered in detail by other publications such as BS 5930 and as such may not be all that useful to practising engineering geologists and civil engineers. Chapters 4 and 5 deal
